I think the honest answer to this is that people were used to prices rising in 1983 because the "natural" rate of inflation was higher for longer. Whereas when prices jumped in 2020, they did so after 30 years of moderate price increases. This works empirically and is reinforced by the polling

A note for the US midterms: I will point out today that many Hungarians who will have voted for Magyar's party were not in love with him, know his many flaws, and are not all 100% satisfied. But in the face of Orban's party, the voters were enthusiastic for the better, if not perfect, choice.
