I can’t emphasize enough how many organizations are asking women for unpaid labor right now. I’m not talking about creep in work demands. I mean “hiring” volunteers for once salaried positions. I mean offering a gig and never mentioning it would be pro bono. Or just not paying when the bill is due.

For the past month, my inbox has been filled with requests for unpaid labor or pleas for jobs from women who are underpaid or out of work entirely. It’s not hard to see that the two are related.

And I have to say, the requests for unpaid labor are nasty. Coercive. I do anti-violence work and the most common message is some variant of “your work is so important that it should continue even if we can’t afford it.”

There is an entitlement to the messages. They’re almost threatening—like there will be more violence in society (and in their org!) if we refuse to work for free. That we have to accept oppression or there will be more oppression.

And mind you, these aren’t actually orgs without money. In the past, we mistakenly accepted a couple of these contacts and quickly learned we were the only people on the team who were unpaid.

This is what it looks like when fascism is pushing women out of the workforce and the public sphere. And if you’re in a position where you can, you should hire women and pay us what we’re worth.
