Think about this. Chatgpt trained on *every* forum where suicide was discussed using words not found in the easiest and laziest wordlists. Where users openly discussed it using every kind of euphemism to get around automated censors. The exact kind of automated censors these "guardrails" are.

It's a guardrail in the same sense any forum's list of banned words is, and is circumvented in the exact same way. And, genAI literally stole all those forums to train on.

Every time you hear about a "guardrail" in genAI, all that means is someone holding a mute button whenever the output contains a keyword. Someone personally hardcoding a "seek a mental health professional" response if the word "suicide" is used. And that very much doesn't work.

This is what genAI "guardrails" are, and why they are inherently insufficient. genAI inherently outputs the statistically most likely sequence of words, and "guardrails" are basically just a list of words to filter from that output to the user. And they stole literally all the words to train on.
