Bikes are not cars. Forcing them to follow the exact same rules is like forcing a round peg into a square hole. Their needs, spatial footprint, and threat to public safety are worlds apart. This is why you have to design streets to control one, and enable the other.

Weaponizing environmental concerns to prevent people from living in our urban environments isn’t new. It’s deployed by people with resources to restrict access to high opportunity areas. It’s nimbyism. In order to reach our housing goals, our land use processes must stop enabling this behavior.

So many people want our parks and streets to be transformed -- we have to stop being scared of the few who are attached to a car-dependent city. Let's have the courage to insist on a bolder vision and start building all ages and abilities scooting/biking infrastructure on every street.

Sound Transit built massive parking garages, subsidized by all of us, and made them free. Obviously they filled up. Then ST went half measures but STILL priced most spaces at $0. Even this minuscule toll makes car-brained suburbanites incandescent. They want 100% car subsidies, all the time.

Something I was thinking about this morning on my ride is how hyper aware I am every time I bike: Checking for passing cars, parked cars, road furniture, pedestrians, potholes, road debris, etc. This is something people should consider when they see victim blaming PSAs about cyclists. But also...

We need a vehicle weight tax. If you can justify buying an $80k, 3,000 kg Wagoneer to haul one bag of groceries, taxpayers shouldn't be subsidizing your pavement wear and tear plus the added danger to our streets. If you can afford the payments, you can afford to stop asking society to subsidize it.

I would love for the energy spent saving one tree in Seattle to instead be directed towards saving the thousands of trees that are cut each year for our sprawling suburbs and rural estates.

Whether it's a nude beach, Bicycle Sundays/Weekends, or speed humps and stop signs, it's clear to those advocating through the public process that there's a separate and more influential channel to the Mayor's Office only available to certain people.

Something I believe: allowing more people to be able to live in this amazing place is a moral necessity.

Just imagine investing this much money, time, energy, political will & space into smart walking, biking & transit infrastructure. There are maybe thousands of these. They not only induce a lot more driving, they make our cities think they can’t afford transport solutions that would ACTUALLY work.

This entire debate is car-brained deflection. Streets are dangerous because of cars. Traffic rules exist to manage them, not people walking or biking. People using bikes don’t need tests. Motorists just need accountability.

Spare me your "cyclists are dangerous" comments. In my years of parenting as my kids leave the house to play, go to school, go out with friends or do anything outside, I’ve never once had to say Watch out for people on bicycles.

Never forget, car dependency isn’t freedom. Some might ask “what’s more free than cars?” Choices. Choices are more free than car dependency. It’s not a hard concept. I’m not pitting cars against any other single mode of transport. I’m rejecting design that creates dependency on just one mode.

Pro tip: if you’re at a 4 way stop and there are kids approaching, just give it a pause and let them all go, yes all of them including the friends that are a few steps back - EVEN if that means you are sitting there for an extra 8 seconds.

Driving defensively and obeying the rules of the road is the most radical, rebellious and anti-social thing you can do in a car.

Five years have passed since I made this video while en route to get groceries. Looking back, rides like these, in the heart of winter, surrounded by snow and chilled air, brought spice to my life and created memories I’ll always cherish. A car could never deliver these feelings.
