I don't like giving advice but I would have liked to hear this when I started submitting work. Writers, you should never pay to submit to a magazine. Its insulting, devalues your work and reinforces the starving artist rhetoric. You deserve to be paid for your art.

We need: A single, central resource that clearly & simply outlines best practices vs. red flags for book & magazine publishers. I started off in a predatory publishing space—and every couple years a new, preventable story emerges. Early writers & pub pros need to know what GOOD looks like.

I get why we have the “shitty first draft” language (anxiety & pressure reduction, great), but oh how I hate it. What about a tender first draft. What about a fresh first draft. Dewy. Just spun. A spiderweb. A draft of sunlight. A pile of leaves. You rake your fingers through them and they rustle.

In the comments, they added it was probably 1000 submissions. I've seen AI bros taunt creators asking if they're afraid of a little competition. I'm afraid of the end of competitions... and anthologies... and slush piles... and unsolicited submissions, which is how I got started as an author.

honestly hate that every time there's an industry bad actor, lists of "works by marginalized authors to support instead" start circulating like it's a moral obligation to be done out of guilt, & it's crickets every other day of the year. my art is not to be taken in as a reactionary measure
