I always find the "leaving students unprepared" argument to be bizarre, since a lot of guys who stumbled backward into LLMs less than 3 years ago seem to already be pretty up to speed, despite not having been raised on it, curricularly speaking, showing it's not that hard to learn if you need it.

I don’t think the end of Sora is a portent of the decline of Gen AI, just a change of tactic. OpenAI has realized that the Palintir model is the path to profit.

Meanwhile, the prototypical “Race Scientist” guy is a tenured professor in a management school who wrote a paper called “The Origins of Oriental Devious: A New Hypothesis” in his spare time after he wasnt allowed to be around female students anymore.

Race science is not some spicy new idea to be debated among academics. It's an old one that famously underpinned persecution and murder in the 19th and 20th centuries and will do so again given a chance because that's what it's for. That's why it exists.

Taken further, it’s obvious these people have never really seen others as fully human to begin with, so AI seems a perfectly reasonable replacement. Human interaction was only ever an inconvenience to be tolerated in order to extract labor; AI liberates them from this facade.

In which a man discusses how a (woman) researcher took him on though he had no experience and poured into him until he could hold his own. And how it’s too onerous for him to do the same for students because AI is just so much easier.

Yes, that’s the issue. I’ve been trying to find a way to articulate this: to the extent that LLMs serve a purpose in education, it’s an indictment of the education system, not a praiseworthy feature of LLMs.

This is a good policy. I hope we see academic journals crafting similar policies. This is what we desperately need: "We want a policy that will help us protect the epistemic commons from slop that dilutes our work, without spending too much time on each paper."

Unsurprisingly, AI is being used to generate, promote, and cite "research" about how great AI is for education.

I've been banging this drum at my university. No one seems to care. The party line is that AI is wonderful, and it is my job to figure out how to get my students to use this amazing new thing. No concern that we might be keeping them from being self-sufficient thinkers for the rest of their lives.

I don’t know how anything will get published now. If we have to manually fact check everything we review (as opposed to giving feedback on the argument), we won’t be able to review nearly the same number of things. (Of course, they’ll suggest we use the same AI systems for reviews as caused this.)

The Trump admin dismissed AI risk assessment, evaluation and bias testing as burdensome overreach. Now their own DoD is requesting exactly that to ensure systems actually work--in war. Basic, foundational safety and effectiveness testing is essential for *ALL* AI use, as are our rights to privacy.
