Yes, the AfD did better than ever. So did the FPÖ in Austria and Le Pen's RN last year. But in all three countries, other elites immediately coordinated to keep the far-right out of government. (Yes, it's PR, and yes, they may yet fail (Austria?)) But at least they tried.

Pretty typical result for elections in the past years. All government parties are predicted to loose, SPD and FDP with massive losses. Merz is going to be the next Chancellor. Big question with what coalition - which is going to be determined by FDP and BSW making it above 5% or not.

Some quick take-aways 1) Merz’ strategy doesn’t pay off (as political scientists predicted), neither in terms of vote share, nor in terms of coalition options. 2) SPD gets worst result in party’s long history. That’s it for Scholz obviously… and accommodation on immigration didn’t pay off, did it?

Hard to overstate how much turns on whether FDP and/or BSW make it to 5.0%. Makes the difference between: - CDU/CSU-SPD coalition versus tripartite coalition / minority govt - favourable arithmetic for debt-brake reform and/or special funds versus messy-to-impossible arithmetic

Estimated cost of LA fires is in the neighborhood of $150 billion. I don't want to ever again hear the argument that climate policy is too expensive.

In short, the paper suggests that ethnic favouritism is actually much less widespread in Africa than many assume. We suggest there is a lot more scope for research on this topic, especially as regards elite-focussed goods provision like university scholarships and government contracts. 7/7 End.
