Britain is beyond redemption.

it seemed caught up in this twee populist notion of having to pick a side and 'win' a debate. It didn't seem very interested in thinking or learning or, well, humanity.

The immediate problems with that aside, it concerned me that any group presenting itself as philosophical in nature would be so disinclined to apply critical thinking and do the work of examining different positions on an ongoing basis.

It concerned me that the official humanist line was deeply dogmatic and that no effort was made to consider differing views at all. There wasn't even sympathy for those who felt differently as a consequence of harrowing personal experiences - just smug moral certitude.

I lost much of my sympathy for the organised humanist movement in the UK over how it handled discussions of assisted dying. That's an option I want for myself, as a seriously ill and disabled person, but I understand why it's complicated and respect differing views.

I mentioned to the Humanist ceo that, as a Disabled woman, I didn’t feel welcome in Humanism, bc of their stance on AD & the way they spoke about Disabled people’s concerns, he smarmed that, ackshually, I was wrong about how I felt and he knew better, but it’s not for him to decide how I feel.

The UK Skeptic/Humanist scene has always been very male pale stale centric, and although there are names like Alex Marshall doing more scientific, intersectional stuff, the groups might as well be Stormfront for trans, disabled, Muslim etc folks

Genuinely don’t get why Humanists are being so weird towards Disabled & Trans people. They used to be ok, but they’re becoming the worst elements of intolerant religions they used to be against. It’s like they got it in their heads that they fought against dogma, so everything they hate is religion.

I have personal experience of this, and you know what? It did me a power of good to sit with that discomfort and have enough humility to consider, "what if they're right and I'm wrong?" And it turned out the autistic people were right, and I was wrong, and it did me no harm at all to recognise it.

All the "free speech" folks from the last fifteen years have taken the position: "This is bad, but it's the fault of the left for going too far."

I'm a broken record on this but the radicalisation and brain rot of Gen X/boomers is a massively under-appreciated problem

And they are getting pushed on the algorithm. Saying “low support needs autistics” are “speaking over parents” - as if parent focused orgs aren’t still dominant, aren’t still getting WAY more funds than any autistic-ran org. If you see it, I beg you to call it out.
