Thanks to the testimony of key animator Toshiaki Hontani, we know that the production of a Spark Lady Yoko pilot episode started for real in the year 1980. The family of Takeo Kitahara (animation director on City Hunter) still keeps some of the drawings he made at the time for this project.

Since then, nothing else was known about Yoko's anime until Yoshifumi Kondō's death, when a few designs came to light in the memorial feature that Animage published about his career in the April 1998 issue. Those drawings and some more were also included in the Kondō Yoshifumi no Shigoto artbook.

The lives and works of the main members of Studio Ghibli seem more than studied at this point, but they're still capable of surprising us. At least, that's what happened to me when I found about Spark Lady Yoko, a project led by the late animator and director Yoshifumi Kondō.
