The range of styles he mastered throughout his first two decades of work is really impressive. Depending on the type of publication, he adopted very different approaches both in form and color, though you can always appreciate an uplifting and stylish intention in all his drawings.

Katsuji Matsumoto (1904-1986) is kind of a legend in the manga world since he became one of the most influental Japanese illustrators in the early and mid 20th century, being instrumental on the establishment of the shōjo manga art style as well as the kawaii aesthetic as we know it today.

Most interesting to me, however, are the short stories in manga form that Inoue drew for a whole decade in various magazines and which give context to many of the recurring elements and characters in his paintings, all with exquisite detail reminiscent of Moebius and Ōtomo.

I am sure that most people in the West came to know about this universe thanks to Studio Ghibli, either through the segments of Whispers of the Heart or with the OVA Iblard Jikan. I was lucky to watch the short film The Day I Harvested a Star at the Ghibli Museum when I visited the place ages ago.
