Just managed to get a copy of Seki's art book and boy, it's absolutely gorgeous! It's full of lovely illustrations from works such as Vicky the Viking, Tom Sawyer and Perrine, including this one of Dogtanian, which is one of my favorites. Top-notch stuff, folks. 👌

Fun fact: this book was written by screenwriter Yamaguchi Hiroshi, who got introduced to Takahashi Ryousuke because of it, and Takahashi was impressed enough that he gave Yamaguchi his first screenwriting job, writing scripts for Armor Hunter Mellowlink

Two album covers by Seiichi Hayashi with similar themes. Seiichi Hayashi is best known for his lyrical and experimental manga for Garo, the famous alternative comics magazine. His animated films have been screened at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, among other institutions.

If you're interested in early manga history, you should follow Niimi-san. You'll learn about stuff you won't see anywhere else. Hopefully eventually everyone in the Japanese manga history sphere will shift from Xdotcom to Bluesky.

Incidentally, Osamu Tezuka published a parody of Norakuro in the same magazine as a tribute in 1984, when he was beginning to have health problems. Although it was only four pages long, I'm sure he had a lot of fun drawing his childhood hero.

Some people think that Norakuro ended after the war, but the serialization was revived in the magazine Maru with Norakuro returning to the military then changing jobs, such as working as a detective and at an inn, before finally settling down as a coffee shop owner. The series was completed in 1980.

Ueda's life is actually very interesting too. JIN's Motoka Murakame drew a manga biography called Fuichin Zàijiàn! (Good-bye, Fuichin!) about the years when she returned to Harbin at the end of World War II and started her career as a mangaka. Hope it gets translated someday!

I'm quite enamored with the art of Toshiko Ueda, who was one of the first women to professionally work on manga after the war. The thin lines and the distinctive smiles make her drawings super charming. 💖

Ghibli is not just about Miyazaki, Takahata and Suzuki. It's about the hundreds of artists and other staff, permanent and temporary, who have worked with the studio over its forty years, and some long before Ghibli existed.
