Today I am once again thinking about how we got a MAGES. developed VN sequel to Grasshopper Manufacture's "Liberation Maiden" back in 2013. The game never released outside of Japan... Its Vita LE cover is still my favorite Yusuke Kozaki illustration.

Very excited to hear that Magical Girl Witch Trials is being localized into English. For those that don't know, the game is very similar to Danganronpa and Ace Attorney only now themed around a witch trial (as the name implies). The game was a surprise hit in Japan and has been getting rave reviews.

Proud to announce that I'm one of the EN translators on Magical Girl Witch Trials (Manosaba)! When I was recruited, I was immediately hooked by the premise of the game... and a mention of certain Love Live cookies and cream girl.

I just found out that the European website for Another Code R is no longer online, with seemingly no archive on the Wayback Machine. One of the cool things that was on the site was an interview with the game's localization team at NOE, which I thankfully took a snapshot of several years ago. (1/2)

Strongly agree with this. I also just have a lot of respect for NOE localizing so many fun and interesting games that were passed on by NOA in the 2010s. Without them, Xenoblade 1, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Another Code R, Solatorobo, and so many other titles would not be playable in English.

1999 VN "Cross Helix", by System Rose, used pre-rendered 3D CG for its character portraits & sepia-colored BGs, resulting in a very unusual yet cool late 90s aesthetic unlike anything I've seen before. BGs go full color during event CGs, probably to add emphasis, which is neat!

Games discourse these past few days has been miserable (as it tends to be whenever something big comes out and everyone loses their minds), but never forget there are more amazing games coming out than anyone has the bandwidth to process. That is a problem too, but as a liker of games, a good one.

25 years ago the third #SakuraWars game was released. Sakura Wars 3 had protagonist Ogami Ichiro travel from Tokyo to Paris and meet a whole new cast of fun characters. With a completely revamped, but still turn-based battle-system and stellar production-values, Sakura Wars 3 was an absolute blast.

Happy 25th anniversary to Sakura Wars 3! I adore the cast in this game, especially the incredibly clumsy, silly Erica Fontaine. I really don't yap about her enough!

I've said it once and I'll say it again: Sakura Wars 3 is one of the Dreamcast's greatest games. If it had been localized back in the day it would now be placed on a pedestal next to games like Skies of Arcadia by western fans and be prominently featured in every retrospective about the console.

In case anyone's curious what this kind of thing looks like practically, here's one line in Detective Instinct. Control codes for fading out/starting music in a specific number of frames, pausing the text printing for a specific number of frames, changing expression mid-line, text speed, etc.

ADVs are a great genre for coming up with creative solutions for expression with low budgets. The recent Famitsu interview between Ishiyama (director of Paranormasight) and Yuji Horii goes into that (and similarly how not having voice acting lets you refine scripts until the end of development)

Sometimes I see all this news about the future of video game graphics and think about the fact that some of the most emotionally powerful moments I've experienced in the medium were just 2D character portraits making a unique expression I hadn't seen up to that point.

Dude, this handheld boost mode might be a game changer. I did some quick tests with Harvestella and Tokyo Xanadu and they both look so much better on the Switch 2's 1080p screen. Even VNs like Tsukihime benefit from the resolution boost, with the game's font now being much more comfortable to read.

The very first Falcom game I played was Ys I & II on the Wii's Virtual Console, but I never finished it. Then I got more into the company's games when I got a PSP along with a copy of Sky FC and Felghana. So I guess I technically started with Ys but I kind of got into both series at the same time.

With people theorizing which company will publish Kyoto Xanadu in the US, it reminded me that there are a surprisingly small number of companies that localize/publish third-party JP games. If you don't count publishers that mainly focus on the digital-only indie/PC space, it's like maybe 4 big ones.

Here is a four page magazine ad for Dragon Slayer, one of Nihon Falcom's earliest RPGs that later spawned a whole family of loosely connected franchises. I really enjoy how the protagonist is portrayed as a weird little gremlin in these ads, compared to the macho man featured on the box art.
