People will acknowledge there’s a housing crisis, acknowledge rents are crushing families, acknowledge homelessness is growing, then immediately oppose any actual housing being built near them. At some point the contradiction becomes impossible to ignore.

There’s a strange belief that housing shortages can be solved without building housing. Endless meetings, outrage, lawsuits, delays, and “community concerns,” but very little willingness to confront basic math.

Some hear “apartment building” and act like the city announced a toxic waste dump next door instead of housing for teachers, nurses, and people who already work in the neighborhood.

Some hear “bike lane” and react like society itself is collapsing because they might have to slow down for eight seconds before making a right turn.

Some people react to the loss of three parking spaces like a humanitarian crisis while completely ignoring the overcrowded apartments and two-hour commutes happening around them every day.

I sat through meetings where people acted like adding a bus lane was some attack on the neighborhood while traffic was already completely cooked. At some point you have to admit the old system stopped working years ago.

Society has normalized irrational thinking around housing. A 200-unit apartment building gets treated like a natural disaster while hour-long commutes, overcrowded apartments, and rising homelessness are accepted as normal background conditions.

Sprawl wasn’t a grand conspiracy as much as cumulative path of least resistance: *cheap fringe land, *subsidized roads/utilities, *easy greenfield approvals, *standardized subdivision rules, *parking minimums, *mortgage systems favoring detached homes, *intense resistance to incremental infill.

It doesn’t match our intuition. Big lawns and ranch homes or craftsman cottages *feel* closer to nature. But an apartment building near a grocery store and a frequent bus line will win on about every measure of human and environmental health.

There aren’t a lot of win-win solutions out there for environmental issues, but dense urban infill is kinda magic. Even at small scale, building up rather than out means less impervious surface and more trees.
