Skid Row has what every neighborhood has: people building community, people protecting community, and people damaging community. The problem is too many people refuse to see it as a real neighborhood.

I know people who gave years and their whole life to Skid Row. They checked on neighbors, built trust, helped people get housed, clean, and fought like hell for their block. That work deserves respect.

Skid Row is not one thing. There are people building community. People protecting community. And people exploiting chaos because chaos benefits them. Those are not the same people.

Skid Row is not a “scene.” It’s a neighborhood. People live there. People know each other there. People fight for each other there. Too many outsiders flatten it into one giant stereotype because it’s easier than seeing actual human beings.

Don’t get me started on Skid Row.

Living on a street with a bus and bike lanes has made me smug. I talk like a guy who owns a yacht. The sidewalk feels less hostile. Crossing the street doesn’t feel like gambling with your life. And traffic is still traffic, but at least it’s not every lane turning into a pissed-off parking lot.

When traffic backs up on my street, fire trucks and police still have a clear lane to move through. The bus still moves. The whole street keeps functioning instead of turning into total gridlock.

All this while I’m watching Kike hit a double. Let’s go dodgers!

Some hear “mixed-use development” and start acting like a six-story building with a coffee shop downstairs is the fall of Western civilization.

Some people react to the loss of three parking spaces like a humanitarian crisis while completely ignoring the overcrowded apartments and two-hour commutes happening around them every day.

Some hear “bike lane” and react like society itself is collapsing because they might have to slow down for eight seconds before making a right turn.

Some hear “apartment building” and act like the city announced a toxic waste dump next door instead of housing for teachers, nurses, and people who already work in the neighborhood.
