One reason I hate death penalty cases is that capital punishment is incredibly stupid and irrational. It's cruel, expensive, and serves no deterrent effect. It's rarely imposed, except against a tiny minority of unlucky defendants—and in those cases, racism almost always plays a role. Just end it.

What’s fun about both Fetterman and Bill Maher is that they vacillate between two modes: one of them is finding war and death and mockery and humiliation hilarious and the other mode is them going “why are you so cruel to me? Why can you not find decency in your heart towards me?”

"One study found that increasing the number of people who receive SNAP benefits by 5 percent could have prevented nearly 32,000 suicides over 15 years. And a $1 increase in minimum wage has been linked to roughly 8,000 fewer suicide deaths over a decade."

How minimum wage hikes and food stamps fit in to suicide prevention
Studies show income, debt and access to basic needs shape mental health outcomes, but U.S. strategies have largely focused on clinical care.

Discourse about finding "the Rogan of the Left" or "the liberal answer to Fox News" rarely accounts for the reality that the entire conservative media universe is the enormously unprofitable vanity project of a few rich sociopaths. It "succeeds" because they don't care how much it costs.

I dont even think I really even...give a fuck about Josh Riley. He has a recent post about gas prices and there are actually 1,500 comments screaming at him. If I'd known as a teen that I'd one day be excited to grow my country music cd collection — country music! — I would have invented a time machine to go forward in time and stop me. Knowing it's from the 1970s would have made it all the more urgent. I think I have a screenplay idea

Sure students can be abrasive, and Kotlikoff maybe wouldn't have been able to just "wait it out." They'd somehow have a tent city based in his back seat in 1/2 hour. But if your leadership/judgment is such that you're even putting your car in reverse here: retire.

People keep saying gutting the VRA and Trump were reactions to the first black President being elected but this is all shit that conservatives have been obsessed with doing ever since the VRA originally passed, along with dismantling the Great Society and the New Deal.

I don't recall any previous transformative technologies that had to be sold to the public so hard. No one in 1999 was going, "Guys. Cell phone? It's coming, whether we like it or not. I think it's important, FOR WOMEN ESPECIALLY, to learn about cell phone. So that we're not left behind!!"

Something I’ve picked up on in many years of reading statements of denial from people accused of sexual violence is that they often focus more on whether the victim is believable than whether the events occurred. Because those details tend to corroborate the allegations. So they attack credibility.

When you drop a bomb on civilians, I think that’s murder. I don’t really care for any justifications. They’re people. The enormity of the loss is devastating and it’s easier for some people to look away. But for other people, that’s their family. Their children. It’s just sickening and so wrong.
