I remember this so well... As the final seconds of a brilliantly funny comedy series, it was shockingly effective. You'd come to 'know' the characters. Nothing could have emphasised the pointless tragedy of it all more effectively. It was a piece of genius.

Alongside the British war dead, especially my own family members, this Remembrance Sunday I shall remember all American liberators but especially these African-American liberators.

The reason I'm reluctant to concede Remembrance Sunday and the symbol of the poppy to jingoistic scolds and nationalistic chauvinists is that I'm old enough to remember the generation who experienced the horrors of 1914-45. Nothing disrespects them more than what many are trying to turn today into.

One of the most precious things about Remembrance is that it sets no political tests. It asks only that we "remember", and that we do so in the silence of our own thoughts. It doesn't dictate what we remember, how we remember or what lessons we draw. That's between ourselves and our conscience.🧵

Obvious book recommendation is obvious (and prompted by a mention elsewhere) but Pat Barker's 'Regeneration' trilogy, set during WWI is tremendous, and wide-ranging: covers poetry, class, anthropology, war, loss, sexuality, psychology... whilst remaining a gripping and non-preachy read.
