As an aside to the fare-free discourse, I just noticed *Staten Island* is the borough here that had the most complaints about cost of service, which is funny to me. I guess a lot of express bus riders?

In both cases we are making some rides free but not others. Splitting it by mode, in a way that drives riders from the faster higher capacity vehicles to the slower, lower capacity ones is essentially the worst place to draw that line.

What are we making free here? I think we shouldn't have to vacuum underneath things. I think if a piece of furniture goes somewhere, it shouldn't get dirty under the furniture. The furniture should create a protection zone from dust.

People do not perceive bus service as reliable, they penalize it heavily every time it is unreliable. That's why bus riders are much more likely to stop taking transit after purchasing a car when compared to rail riders (metro/subway/regional/commuter/intercity). To fix buses, you have to fix that.

Zohran has successfully united the left and urbanist liberals on the need for both more housing supply plus strong rent regulations and deeper subsidized affordability. I hope in the course of governing he will adjust in a way that this also happens with fare policy, but that will be harder.
