Wet and windy on Dartmoor, Devon early this morning. This Cuckoo Cuculus canorus has just left the Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis nest though it won't move far for a few days. They are very vulnerable to predation by Foxes and Crows at this stage so hope it survives.

Common Cudweed, in huge abundance in a Lincolnshire arable field margin. Thousands of saplings were planted here in January ‘25 unfortunately they are not doing so well, perhaps only 30% having survived.

Has there ever been such a sad painting as this? I don't think so. The poor bird is captive, he has wings but unable to escape. There's a bit of all of us in this little bird. 372 years yet it still speaks to our hearts. The Goldfinch - Het Puttertje in 1654 by Dutch painter Carel Fabritius.
