I was not the only person today amongst a small group of people, observing an Otter feeding in the River Nidd, near Bilton North Yorkshire that had never ever seen one in the wild before. Followed shortly afterwards with a Kingfisher flypast and another personal first sighting of bobbing Dippers!

Garden birds, Mosquitos and Springtails have been amongst the first residents to find the garden “litter bin lagoon”. Along with an unglamorously named Rat-tailed maggot. Perhaps the aquatic larvae of the harmless nectar feeding, flower pollinating Drone-fly, an accomplished Honey Bee mimic.

Squeezed some time in between other jobs today swirling some more of this seasons living willow screen growth on “The Nettles” adding to that completed with a monthly volunteer group a couple of weeks ago. Much more pruning twisting and turning to be done between now and the end of February.

The first icing over of the garden wildlife pond will have seen off the last of the Pond Skaters but there will be much life going on beneath it. The now browned senescent Barred Horsetail in the foreground was a favoured perching point for Damsel and Dragonflies over the Spring and Summer.
