Out on the Dingle peninsula for the new year. This happens to be the only known locality in Ireland for Sibthorpia europaea (Cornish Moneywort). Dropped in on one of the lovely populations today 😍

Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) taken over in clearfell area. Tall (1.5 m), dense clusters of berries. Bitter bark-less browsed by deer. Release from shade resulted in leggy growth. Search shows Ligustrum has heavier fruiting in full light & this makes certain species more invasive doi.org/10.1086/342632

Galanthus x grandiflorus (syn x hybridus) is like elwesii but has strong grooves on the leaves and often disproportionately large flowers. Either subspecies of the parents can be involved but in wild situations if is usually elwesii ssp elwesii x plicatus ssp plicatus

Persistence pays off! Six months on, Jude has tracked down this gall on Hemlock Water-dropwort as the rust fungus Uromyces lineolatus f scirpi-oenanthe-crocati. NBN shows records only from Scotland and East Anglia; ours was from Haverfordwest in the far corner of Wales

Cyclamen coum was a great find by Max on his first New Year Plant Hunt. He just called it a 'purple one' but I'll forgive him for not knowing what it's called as he's only two.

A total of 26 flowering species recorded on the Warren for the BSBI #NewYearPlantHunt Similar to recent years but with 56 species over the last five years only a few regulars. This year Dove's-foot Crane's-bill was a new addition with Butcher's Broom, Sea Radish and Red Valerian making 2nd showings

Garlic Mustard, my first and favourite plant for #NewYearPlantHunt. Other highlights were a glorious Turkeytail Fungus and icy geometric frost crystals. #Wildflowerhour

I enjoyed taking part in the #NewYearPlantHunt organised by @bsbibotany.bsky.social over the past two days. Here are the results of my wanderings in south Glasgow - although half of these had to be disregarded because they had been deliberately planted.

Primrose found today too - feels very early for Yorkshire! Max called this one a 'daisy' but in my opinion knowing any specific flower names at two is good going (and I did add it correctly to my New Year Plant Hunt survey). @bsbibotany.bsky.social
