Still on the Exe around Turf/Lympstone but no sign at the Warren today

6/12/25 - a great day for me in terms of UK ticks: 2020 (Ring-billed Gull and Sociable Plover) and now, in 2025, this Lesser Crested Tern, at Dawlish Warren, Devon. #birds 🪶🐦

Thrilled to have seen the gorgeous Lesser Crested Tern y'day. Initially chasing rainbows with failed attempts at Turf Lock & Dawlish Warren. However a tumble down a dune & bag of doughnuts later, news of this gem settled off Cockwood Steps emerged, & wow, it gave brilliant views. Totally worth it.

A trip to Dawlish Warren to see my first Lesser Crested Tern in Britain for 36 years. Finally having some fantastic views on the mud off Cockwood on the rising tide this afternoon. #UKBirding

The Lesser Crested Tern on the Exe Estuary gave me the run around today. I eventually had good views from Cockwood. Cattle Egret at Powderham & Barn Owl on Exminster Marshes added extra interest.

The Lesser Crested Tern gave everyone a merry chase today - seen off Starcross distantly on a sandbar 1250-1320 then eventually gave immaculate views on the near shore off Cockwood Steps 1330pm to 1415pm at least

A good afternoon around Teignmouth and Starcross.

After a few hours we finally had good views of the Lesser Crested Tern, it touched down on the shoreline off Cockwood Steps. We watched it for an hour with about 50 other birders. #UKBirding

I've seen some excellent birds at Dawlish Warren down the years, including Greater Sand Plover, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Semipalmated Plover, Lesser Grey Shrike & Broad-billed Sand. This week's Lesser-crested Tern is right up there with them. This superb image by Portland birder Pete Coe #ukbirding

Back to Cockwood today as my views of a distant 'orange-billed' Tern weren't great and certainly inconclusive on 03/12. But today though distantly perched it did one circuit our way and gave great in-flight scope views. A few quick shots with a 400mm lens. Happy I've seen Lesser Crested Tern👍

Lesser Crested Tern Thalasseus bangalensis off Dawlish Warren this morning. Was speedily succesful catching a good sized fish. Probably the rarest bird I will see in my lifetime. A probable vagrant from W/N.Africa and found in Indian Ocean as far east as Australia.

Dawlish Warren birding Scanned bay from Langstone Rock: 7 Great Northern Divers; 5 Velvet Scoters; c.30 Common Scoter; 11 Great-crested Grebes. Watched passerines feeding in the sun: est. 14 Chiffchaffs and the distinctive call of a Yellow-browed Warbler (but couldn’t see it). #DevonBirding

The 5 Velvet Scoters were again off #LangstoneRock #DawlishWarren along with 9 Common Scoters and a further c30 common flying west late morning.

The five Velvet Scoters at Dawlish Warren in sunny and dull weather but distant. Still eight Common Scoter. A Kingfisher hovering over the waves was unexpected.

Thought I’d have a nose around Dawlish Warren for a couple of hours this afternoon. No stripey warblers sadly but plenty of Goldcrests & Chiffs to keep my hopes up. Best of the birds: Dartford Warbler, Barnacle Goose (my 1st this year), 12 Common Scoter & a great Great Northern Diver.

After finding not much at the Nose 1st thing, I tried for Slav{s} from Cockwood Crossing. The 🌧️ kindly waited until after the 11th hour, the grebes were less helpful 😔 More helpful was the @warrenbirding.bsky.social Garganey, who flew through my field of view while I was scanning the duck masses! 😄🦉

Yesterday @wildweevils.bsky.social and I went to Dawlish Warren and we got great views of a couple Kingfishers fishing in the main pond! this is my first time getting decent photos of a Kingfisher so i’m quite proud:)
