Last night we also had a surprise when this juvenile Knot found its way into our nets. This species is only just annual in the #LDV and is only the second ever to have been ringed on the reserve – one to look out for if you're visiting at the weekend @yorkbirding.bsky.social

Just 20+ have been present so far this winter – down from 150 in the 1990s and 2000s @yorkbirding.bsky.social

Last night our ringing team were successful with two Ruff caught and colour-ringed in the flock by Bubwith Bridge (as part of our long-term study of the species) and one where climate change impacts are sadly driving a real change in status with numbers falling @yorkbirding.bsky.social

Our latest BTO ringing recoveries inc. a young Chiffchaff ringed at #SkipwithCommon NNR (presumably on passage) on 01/09/25, which was then controlled by ringers just 24 days later, 701 km away in Trunvel, Treogat, Finistère, France @yorkbirding.bsky.social

These colour ring resightings are always really valuable to add to the known life histories of birds from long-term studies, so please do look out for c/r birds when visiting the reserve - thank you 🐦

Great to hear about two Shelduck summering (probably breeding) at WWT Washington over the last two years - both were originally ringed in the #LDV, including one which is now 10 years old. Thanks to Christopher Bill for the superb image @yorkbirding.bsky.social

There's also been plenty of gull action in the #LDV inc. an Iceland Gull (Friday) - first since 2021 + at least 5 Caspian Gulls & an adult Mediterranean Gull in the Wheldrake roost, with an adult Little Gull seen briefly at North Duffield Carrs with Black-headed Gulls @yorkbirding.bsky.social

Several Marsh Harriers and Red Kites have also been present around the #LDV since the turn of the year, with two Merlin’s lingering around East Cottingwith (good winter for this species - presumably attracted by some of the large mixed finch flocks wintering in the area) @yorkbirding.bsky.social

Murky visit to North Duffield Carrs this morning. Lots of White-fronted Geese - 2 skeins flew over which had gone into a field close by blending in with the Pink-footed Geese plus more viewed from the hides. Had just missed the Slavonian Grebe but did see the Greater Scaup. @ldvnnr.bsky.social

@yorkbirding.bsky.social area is on fire so far this year. Highlights for me so far are waxwing, 30+ bean geese, shag, smew, 300+ white fronts,RC pochard, white-tailed eagle,twite, scaup, raven, and brambling. Thousands of birds moving through the @ldvnnr.bsky.social which is brilliant to see.

LDV birding continues to be really good this year. I didn't manage to see the Slavonian grebe today but did find a Drake Smew at Thorganby along with an interesting hybrid goose.

We used to get swarms of sparrows on our feeder (in a normal suburban garden in York) - down to a trickle over the last 18 months or so, and surprisingly now seeing more reed buntings than sparrows. Anyone else observing similar? @yorkbirding.bsky.social
