Sadly 2024 was one of the poorest breeding seasons for Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers since we started in 2015. Only 11 nests were found/monitored & on average only just over one young fledged per nest. This is probably not enough to sustain the population, www.woodpecker-network.org.uk/index.php/news

Lots of Plover at NDC today, mainly Green but prob. c.500 Golden. Good numbers now of Dunlin. Lovely close views of 9 Whoopers close in to Aughton church, separate from the flock on W bank. 7 Pochard & 52 Tufted on Refuge, Wheldrake Ings, viewed from bank N of E Cott.

Cistanche phelypaea in saltmarsh at the mouth of the Guadiana, Portugal (April 2024). This striking plant belongs to the Orobanchaceae (broomrape family) and is parasitic on perennial glassworts and other Amaranthaceae.
