Dull dull dull Scotland’s uplands are in a terrible state. This is the result of sheep, deer and driven grouse shooting.

Leaving a patch of grass to grow long creates a shady place for wildlife to shelter during hot weather. Wildflowers like white clover and ox-eye daisies may appear in unmown grass – these are an excellent source of nectar for all kinds of insects. More: littlegreenspace.org.uk/features/hel...

This is the Llynor. It's one of the cleanest tributaries on the Dee. No farmyards or sewage treatment works upstream. And it's mostly forest, a big section being restored to ancient woodland. But it has a major problem.

Ragwort is a biodiversity super plant supporting 200 insect species.

There are so many deer in the woodland I am not sure the young oak trees stand a chance. Wire fencing may be needed.

Top of my list of missing native species we should be looking at reintroducing to Ireland? Lynx!! • Never attack people • Rarely attack livestock • Aren't pack animals • Help regulate deer • Help regulate smaller predators, like fox • Are a huge tourist draw • Are just GORGEOUS!!
