imo Ys 8 makes one of the strongest arguments I've ever seen that designing a "you can go everywhere you can see" game using separated zones instead of open world "go anywhere" can actually be significantly more compelling and unified-feeling. this game really has absolutely top tier sightlines

One thing I really appreciate about old JRPGs is how they'd compose music for areas that'd only be heard once. It helped punctuate those moments, & made them really stand out in your mind. Finding a secret area was often just as important as the music that accompanied it.
