Quick question for my indie game devs: are you a friggin weirdo? It feels like you kind of have to be weird to pursue making a game yourself. I know I am. I can survive in an office environment but only because I'm too talented to get rid of. It is very clear I do not fit in at all.

Hot take but I think video games are cool and good

In my game, crew have a size, to dictate how many you can fit on the ship (there are plenty with 0 size so your board can still be infinite). Size doesn't do anything else, but I was thinking of making it so it costs more mana to bounce something bigger to hand. Feels like getting too cute though.

I will never ever get used to the European pace of doing things. At a very critical juncture in trying to buy this home and people are like yeah can't respond to an email it's the weekend. Sure you have to make very important decisions in like 5 days but we're going to spend 2 of them not replying

This is shaping up to be the most complex opponent AI in single player card game history, but hey when you aim to beat the best you gotta be the best.

Card game logic is easy, all you do is calculate all the possibilities for each card when used as a mana source and then all the possibilities for each card as an attacker with each combination of blockers and instant speed combat effects, then find the optimal usage combinations and play the best.

I feel like I'm spending too much time on opponent AI, but I guess in a single player game opponent AI is kind of critically important. And then also once I can finish this I can actually PLAY the game without playing against myself. So I guess it's a good thing to spend a lot of time on.

I thought I was watching Pokemon not Jojo (I have never watched Jojo because I don't like the animation, but these weird detailed zoom ins gave me the same vibe)

I have to say, staying away from the discover tab and sticking to feeds again has been doing wonders for my mental health. Just looking at indie game content is much better for my anger levels than unceasing horrors. I like to be informed, but it's nice to have a break sometimes.

Bad game design exists, but only in my games

Load up a new early access indie game, Y axis is inverted by default with no option to turn it off. That's fine with me, I always use inverted Y axis. Game freezes and I have to quit out and open it again. Y axis is no longer inverted despite still not having an option for it. ???

All I want is one week in a row without some new absurd fascist horror. Just one week of nothing horrifying. I'm tired boss.

*Looking at Steam game releases* Wow 130 trading card games last year? That seems like a lot. *Clicks on the list* Oh almost none of these are actual TCGs, these are all just roguelike deckbuilders getting tagged as TCG for some reason.

Early Access is so weird because to me it's for like okay the game is basically done but needs some balance/polish. Then I play some early access games where there is so little content I wouldn't even put it out as a demo. I don't want to release something with my name on it unless it's DONE done.

The downside of being an indie game dev is I can never be a game reviewer now because every grade would just be 10/10 they finished their game

I haven't started on saving and loading yet, but I'm torn between the lazier and more comprehensive "serialize everything" and the harder and more player friendly "find out exactly what you need and just write that out"

I'm watching my buddy @plasticallan.bsky.social stream, and we share a lot of games in common we like. I said I would run something really obscure, so I bring up the most obscure game I liked ages ago: the free MMO Well of Souls. Which of course he also played. Anyone else ever play Well of Souls?

The first game console I'm moving over to Europe will be the GameCube, mostly because it's small. Though I realized of the GameCube games I have on hand, they're basically all bangers. What a selection, honestly.

Kind of amazing that they made 25 Harvest Moon games before Stardew came out, and never managed to make one as good as Stardew. And that's not even counting spinoffs! They sat on a golden goose for 25 years and just thought it was a regular goose!

Pro tip: In your tutorial if you're showing someone how to play a farming game you don't need to make the NPC comment after every square tilled. And then every square planted.

I know people love game jams, but as someone who hates competition and hates strict timelines those things sound like a nightmare to me. Spend time I could spend working on my game instead being really stressed and feeling awful? No thanks.

The best part of being an indie game dev is that I get to fill the game with things my 8 year old self would think are awesome.

In modern day indie game dev, there are no corners you can cut. You have to be maximally creative and thoughtful with *everything* from art to coding to gameplay to marketing. To some people that's terrifying, but to me that is exciting. I love having the freedom to just go wild in all areas.

I started making enemy AI two weeks ago and oops I accidentally made like 20 different versions and variations of enemy AI. And I haven't even looked at my notes on enemy AI yet.

My partner found this "Retro Gameconsole" in a store and got it for me. 104 built in 8 bit games, with a screenshot that both looks like crap and is very clearly not 8 bit, and no list of games of any kind. It cost a whopping 7 dollars. I'm excited to see how crappy it is.
