I know I keep posting about this but every time I check, the list gets longer and longer and longer. Hundreds and hundreds of places, everything from huge local institutions to small spots that will definitely struggle. No exaggeration, it's the most astonishing act of solidarity I've ever seen.

Seriously,

This is a really important story, and one that explains the place of the Hmong community in the Twin Cities and why this entire occupation is really just ethnic cleansing (my words). Also, props to Marisa for doing the work to get this story right when so many out-of-town journalists have failed.

What people know about publicly is only a fraction of the work actually going on, much of which is being done very quietly for the safety/security of our vulnerable neighbors. Truly inspired by so many people (you know who you are) right now. And truly surreal that any of this is even necessary.

I love this point in Margaret Sullivan's newsletter: "There should be far less emphasis on 'we don’t want to look biased,' and far more on 'how well are we doing our jobs of getting across the truth?'” It's not biased to call out authoritarian liars. 1/2🧵

Half the battle with this guy is just reiterating government can and already does good things that are so ubiquitous they’ve become invisible. He’s able to remind you in a way that you understand that good government can exist outside of a 24/7 vengeance operation, and in NYC already does.

Very curious what the long-term ripple effects of this ICE occupation will be. Many very privileged people have stepped up to prevent their own government from disappearing their non-white neighbors and have now confronted inequalities and social problems they never would have experienced firsthand.

These are prisons. The criminalization of homelessness and push towards mandated, coerced medical interventions and civil commitment—a bipartisan project—was always going to lead us here. This is why when we talk about, strategize and organize around abolition, we must include ALL carceral spaces.

It is hard for me not to regard the failure to recognize that the AI boom is inextricable from totalitarian creep as willful ignorance, as either the delusions of those who believe they are immune or an endorsement that doesn’t require a vulgar red cap. But AI boosterism is Trumpism now. Full stop.
