Genuinely DISTRAUGHT to find that the essay about the modern world I have been slowly and vaguely composing in my head was already written, and in much better style, half a century ago.

With the demise of Ange Postecoglu I have no choice but to announce that the ceremonial title of Big Ange (bestowed upon the most important Ange reigning, and previously held by Angelas Rayner, Merkel & Lansbury) has passed to Angela Eagle. I am pro-life and take no pleasure in reporting this

I've written a poem, but it's maybe a bit too political for Bluesky. It's called 'The Problem with Populism'. The problem with Populism Is that it's quite reminiscent Of some other words which you *do* know the meaning of.

A trio of new books argue that we need to confront the full range of costs that car-based living has imposed on our cities, our health and our society.

I was gonna post something about 'tyranny of the minority' but that's just 'tyranny', isn't it? Original flavour. But yeah people arguing for electoral reform (small r) should use Tyranny of the Minority more i think. A good slogan.

I didn't actually realise that I could vote for labour deputy leader until the email arrived just now (member of affiliated union innit). I thought it might be spam tbh but the number of people interested in politics probably isn't high enough to make that a scam worth doing.

And as we learned from that, the first step in all of these things is framing something with an obvious and well studied correct answer as a debate knowing that doing so means that ~20% of people will choose the wrong answer just out of contrarianism, and immediately you've created a split

People who complain that there is a 'war on cars' don't seem to realise that it was them who started it. "no we did not start it" Yes you did, you invaded every square inch of public space in our cities and killed loads of innocent people.

My experience is that there was a an absolutely huge gap between people’s beliefs about how their immigration systems work and how they actually work, and if you’ve had experience of the immigration system in the US or UK, you’ll spend a lot of time with one raised eyebrow when the topic comes up!

Not "extremes". ONE extreme. There are no front-line governing politicians in the USA, UK or most other places promoting Stalinism. And it is not extreme to be wholeheartedly in favour of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.

Government needs to argue for immigration not because it will make liberals happy, but because in 2029, there will still be 200k people a year coming to the UK, and the position can’t be “the experiment is now only a little bit squalid”.
