It's not just the women and girls we know of. It's all their future work, and everything they could have been, and how we build structures that shelter their abusers. It's how a man's future has always been worth more than my past, present, and future combined.

All my love goes out to the creators affected by this. Hate to see creators suffer, especially over company woes.

I wrote this about Teen Vogue getting nuked near the end of last year, and today, especially, it feels particularly apropos. Made it public and sharing here again, in case you want a little bit of expressed rage in your afternoon reading.

This is the thing. Freelancing happens to work very well for some people as individuals (me, for instance) but society needs real newsrooms and real teams. We gig writers are just part of the ecosystem.

journalists are workers who deserve to be paid fairly for our labor and I think that far too few consumers of media recognize or even care about this fact

So many people doing great work here; many of us were caught in layoffs repeatedly or squeezed out of traditional staff jobs. I value the indie media ecosystem so much but there's also a critical need for newsrooms and their resources: Some stories need a lot of support, especially investigations.

when i give wired dot com $40 i get access to so many journalists‘ work, when i give my favorite writer $40 i only get that one person’s work AND i can only do that for like one person a year. it sucks!!!!

i know that this is an unpopular take, but everyone starting their own newsletter as a revenue stream is not a sustainable model for writing and reporting or for people who love and want to pay for media.
