By contrast, with #SingleStair the exit stair is always right out your front door (and you’re only sharing it with a relative handful of people). By the time the FD arrives everyone able bodied can be out with time to spare.

The long hallways, in particular, seem to be a real problem. They allow smoke to spread from one unit to many others, they massively increase the distance you have to travel to get out, and they act like a giant funnel channeling big crowds into the egress stairs.

I was at a consultation yesterday. The proposed rules should be released soon. Still fairly high level at this point.

I know there are some lingering misgivings among the fire services but I believe these buildings are safer than single fam homes, safer than tall towers, and safer than apartment blocks with long hallways.

Appreciate @vanfirerescue.bsky.social and @cityofvancouver.bsky.social staff collaborating to create rules for #SingleStair buildings (up to 6 storeys, max 30 units). These aren’t a silver bullet for all our housing challenges but they are a ‘Silver Key’ for unlocking small lot accessible housing

Are there any global examples of 4-8 storey single stair “liner” buildings with a tower (skyscraper) behind? Something like putting a tower in the middle of a European courtyard.
