Every statistic about how bad the economy is getting is going to be buried or cooked by the end of the year. Quarterly earnings reports shifting to semi-annual earnings will ensure private companies donāt inject reality too often by talking about declining sales, etc.

For the class of people running things in this country, America was just a vibe, basically. All the rah-rah, chest-beating, flag waving stuff. None of them meaningfully believed in any of it. Just swept aside completely in the face of literal cartoon villainy. Minimal resistance. Whoosh. Gone.

The Third Reich didn't last 1,000 years. Pinochet was ousted with a referendum. And the US isn't exactly dealing with the smartest, most competent fascists. Those of you insisting that 2025 is forever need to read a book, touch grass, go to therapy, anything other than trying to make others quit.

This is the current political situation. This was the political situation in 2016. I'd argue this was the political situation in 2010. It is perhaps true that it has been the political situation since 1980. In any case, it remains the situation. No one who matters believes it.

If you spent even one second of the last decade indulging the free speech claims made by the American right in earnest, I genuinely think you're lacking in intelligence. I do not think you have what it takes to deliver sound commentary on American politics.

As I've said, it was possible to tell oneself from ~1975-2000 that politics was just a debate about policies, but this was an unusual period of our history. Leaders in politics and media didn't grow up in a world where deep factionalism was normal and don't know how to handle our return to it.
