I don't know what will happen in NYC tonight, but I do know that regardless of outcome, any number of public figures, celebrities, politicians and institutions that oppose Mamdani have done so with a level of rhetorical ugliness, racism, and dishonesty that should neither be forgotten nor forgiven.

It doesn’t matter what I think. Also, none of this would ever happen. But if I had a zillion dollars: 1. Run a “we do hard things” campaign across southern and rust belt states. Invest heavily in local, state and regional social infrastructure. Sponser later hours at a library, build a skate park…

My students read this. They really don’t like the idea of their work going into an LLM and they want professors to be transparent about how AI will be used or not used in class.

Apparently I woke up and decided to set a new personal record for how many tabs I can have open that are D2L. I'm grading an assignment where I need to see what they did the previous assignment and what I said about what they did. Plus the usual tabs when grading.

I'm reading The Eagle & The Hart by Helen Castor. It's about Richard II & Henry IV. This passage was LOL: To no one's surprise, the French proved unwilling to pause their preparations for war while Richard tried to kill his uncle and assault his archbishop.

This past week I've spent time pulling ephemera off our shelves in the Zs. Begone 3-ring binders and spiral bound documents! Also, random tiny pamphlets about libraries in other states from the 80s and 90s are outta here!

Portland's attitude towards protesting is very much "all the cool kids are doing it" so it's not within my direct experience to have to weigh it as a potential reputation ruiner, but a lot of people did that calculus today and were brave anyway and I just think that needs to be said more often

I don't have something I can link y'all to yet, but I have some very credible and important information I need to share. The American Library Association laid off what I've heard is 15 people this week. Among them was the director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom. ALA has no OIF anymore.

also many things about her life and by extension mine are more challenging than they might be otherwise, but many things are great and I’ve never wished her different—that just feels very foreign to me. like, she just is who she is. I don’t want a different kid! I want the world to be better for her

As a Black girl from Oklahoma and Texas, Beyoncé creating Cowboy Carter made me feel incredibly seen; these parts of my identity made sense out loud and the concert was otherworldly. Beyoncé is also a billionaire artist who borrows the aesthetics of civil rights

To sum up: interactions you have with other human beings through text are still interactions with other human beings. Interactions with LLMs are not, but they are designed to look and feel like that, in ways that will train you to forget that other people are people.

The conversation between Klein and Coates showed me that a lot of people who screech about “infighting” on the left aren’t aware of the fact that marginalized people have been forced to learn how to regulate their emotions during conflict, and so, are better able to hear what’s actually being said.
