This thread is the reality that me and other parents supporting trans kids are living right now. The UK is pushing conversion on all trans kids, and directing state violence against anyone who tries to provide the affirmative healthcare and social support that is a basic right for any trans kid.

This is institutionalised state-enforced conversion practices. How are we meant to trust that the UK Government intends to deliver an inclusive conversion therapy ban (first promised in 2018 by Theresa May) when they're currently using the police as a weapon to impose it on trans people?

The EHRC guidance is extremely dangerous. It threatens to exclude trans people from public and community spaces completely, and segregate trans children from their schools. It is a direct threat to the human rights of association and self-expression. It cannot be permitted to be enforced.

When people are told that trans identities are not real by figures in positions of authority and power they may attempt to enforce that imposed reality on others. They will not succeed. No more than "pray the gay away" ever did. But people will suffer as a result. We need a ban. We need it now.

The proposals for a ban on conversion practices are ready and have been consulted on, the legislation can be brought to parliament this year - instead the Scottish Government has chosen to kick it into the long grass. This should be seen as what it is, a betrayal of LGBTQ+ people.
