I don’t agree with double-jobbing for our politicians, with the exception of emergency service personnel. Being a councillor is a full-time job (it should be paid accordingly) and so is that of an MSP. Hopefully, we see amended legislation in this Parliament.

Last week, we learned that the number of young people not in employment, education or training in the UK reached a grim milestone of 1 million earlier this year. The UK now has the highest NEET rate of any European country in the OECD and the only EU country with a higher rate than us is Romania.

Aberdeen is getting hit with job cuts across the board. Oil & gas is in terminal decline, college and uni cuts limit transition opportunities, and our media is becoming further centralised in Glasgow and, to a lesser extent, Edinburgh. This is not just or sustainable. Where is the action plan?

The Tories are posing as ‘defenders’ of the North Sea. Tens if not hundreds of thousands of oil and gas workers lost jobs in the decade after the 2014 price crash under the Tories. These workers were discarded, not planned for and often left Scotland to work abroad. We all lost out as a result.

The lack of working-class representation in our Parliament is very striking. We have some well meaning middle-class folk in there but representation matters. Just look at the years of college cuts, voted through by those same well-meaning people.

It’s clear from results that the central belt focused parties need to do more to engage with and serve the people of North East Scotland. Didn’t see any effort from candidates in my neighbourhood. No sign of anyone at polling stations again, something I was accustomed to growing up in Edinburgh.

Incredibly frustrating that Maggie and the Dundee & Angus Greens blocked my branch from standing here. We had a great candidate in William and would have easily won back our deposit. Similar story across the North East.

This election is dire. Two things have cut through – prison abolition and the boat brag. Neither positively. Sleep-inducing leader debates. Few inspiring candidates. The manifesto's watered down from 2021, horrendous, and/or uncosted. No wonder the public reaction is “meh”.

Just back from a series of focus groups on Scotland, lots more to report, but the thing that jumped out was this was possibly the most unenthusiastic or “meh” I’ve ever experienced people be about their choices in an election.
