Gentrification in the literal sense of the word requires poor people to be displaced so it can’t really be framed as good. But the word has lost all meaning lately. People see bike lanes and new coffee shops appearing in historically poorer parts of town and believe that is what gentrification is.

Gentrification in the way the word is colloquially used to just mean “new buildings and cafés appear”: on-net good esp if it comes with infrastructure upgrades Gentrification in the literal sense, usually perpetuated by single family homeowners resisting upzoning: very bad, displaces poor people.

A key finding indicates up to 100 acres of public space currently occupied by highway 99 could be reclaimed. The Reroute + Reclaim option would free up 59 acres for environmental and shoreline restoration, 41 acres for housing, parks, and industry, and leave 17 acres for streets.

Rerouting and reclaiming SR 99 through South Park would result in an 86% reduction in Pollution Generating Impervious Surfaces, per this report. It really seems like that would help Southern Resident Killer Whales more than keeping housing banned.

The Waterfront was absolutely packed after the Belgium vs. Egypt match. ⚽️ A decade ago, this scene wouldn’t have been possible. The rebuilt waterfront has transformed the walk between the stadiums and Pike Place into one of Seattle’s great public spaces.

This is where I'm at. I already know I'm going to be treasuring these few weeks in Seattle for years, despite not caring about soccer one iota.

Thankfully we didn’t have to do SEPA review before passing the moratorium. It would have been significantly delayed due to a need to complete the analysis and to allow appeals from data center developers. These appeals go both ways and are often used by businesses too and delay legislation.

Also, affordable housing at Ft. Lawton in Magnolia has been delayed since 2008 due to ongoing “environmental” appeals.
