Another square on the @piratereadingclub.bsky.social bingo! Enjoy the second story in this book Why Did The Wheel Creek even more than the title story. I tend to like my mysteries a little twistier than these were but I enjoyed the familiar beats in an unfamiliar (to me) setting.

3.75⭐️ definitely not as profound as people will make you believe, and at times annoyingly pseudo deep, but overall really sweet and enjoyable. i really loved the precise language, and there are so many sweet beautiful observations in here. really makes you feel things.

Read Shipwrecked! by Martin W. Sandler for @piratereadingclub.bsky.social. Neat book with shipwrecks from all over the world & different time periods. One of the neatest things discovered was possibly the first computer ever made, the Antikythera Mechanism.

First entry for @piratereadingclub.bsky.social Bingo is ‘Brooklyn Dreams’ by J.M. DeMatteis. Main character talks about growing up in Brooklyn during the 1960s/1970s, family, and figuring life out. Largely based on the author’s own personal experiences. Interesting read with multiple art styles.

A book with a LGBTQ+ protagonist that is NOT about coming out: Fadeout by Joseph Hansen. Published in 1970, it’s the first in a noir series featuring a gay main character, Dave Brandstetter. Great prose, very of the genre. (Mind the pub date—it’s also very much of the era.)

started off the year and Pirate Reading Bingo with Sorcerer of the Wildeeps by Kai Ashante Wilson, and realized partway through I could put it on the “magical creature” square. It was beautiful, the Captain and Demane had such a compelling dynamic, and it also made me laugh out loud.

4⭐️ i don’t typically read much YA, but this was fun. i have some beef with the gendered magic system and the concept of Doing Boy Thing To Prove You’re A Real Boy, and sometimes the writing felt a little rough, but this was still a thrilling story with absolutely lovely characters.

Book 30 for #piratereadingclub is ‘Flesh & Blood So Cheap: The Triangle Fire and Its Legacy’ by Albert Marrin. 146 people, mostly women, died in a fire which could have been avoided had the company put in fire prevention measures. The fire did lead to all sorts of safety measures & regulations.
