I think this observation captures a lot of what's going on with the supposed zeal of the converted. When you arrive at some behaviour as an active decision you relate to it differently than if it's the default. I don't think this phenomenon is inherently good or bad, it's just interesting.

No other game in the modern eye has people going "well, YOU can play it the way it's written in the book, but the book supports me mangling it into whatever position I like and openly discarding the rules as the superior way to play the game".

If you're here to play a game, then I think you should play the game you're here to play, instead of not playing the game you're here to play.
