The core resolution mechanic of a game is not always that important, and rarely what makes a game great. I love Ars Magica, but I would not care a whit if a new edition used 2d6, or d20-roll-under, or a d100, so long as it still had the magic system that makes you feel like a scholarly magician.

"Genre emulation" sometimes misses a key reason people want to play in a particular type of fictional setting or scenario. "What would *I* do in that situation?" is a fun question to answer in play, but is suppressed if a game encourages lavish imitation of what characters in that genre already do.
