Spirit of the 366th by Henry W. Bannarn, 1943. Bannarn grew up in Minnesota but moved to NYC where he taught art alongside another Harlem Renaissance artist, Charles Alston. This painting depicts a soldier in the 366th Infantry Regiment, a segregated unit that was active in both World Wars.

When I was a kid I served Mass once for the bishop. His MC went over the liturgy beforehand, like when to take the bishop’s miter etc and assured me that nobody would notice any mistakes because a bishop at a parish is a rarity. When he handed me the miter during Mass I immediately dropped it.
