Came up with a new game idea/prototype this morning, just using 2 decks of playing cards to test the idea and it works! I played multiple games of it with my mum and we both enjoyed it. I love it when a game concept works in early iterations!

Picked up prints of a recent painting of mine as a friend had ordered one. These are poor photos taken in my car with the print in plastic but I am floored by how good they look, by how much it pops and looks like actual paint. Super happy!

I've been thinking a bit about playtesting in board game design🎲✂️. I tend to see playtests as three-layered, where each layer serves a certain purpose for me; the intimate idea testing, the design test, and the public test.

What if I told you that the only reason I am bald is that I’m afraid of a Ratatouille situation? What if I told you that I’d have so much hair if not for the fear of a rat using me like a puppet? These are modes of control, Neo. This is how they manipulate us. Ratatouilles, Neo. Rats that pull hair.

This also applies to multiple forms ‘book’ and multi-page graphic design. Heck even single page design. ‘White space’ is a powerful tool.

This is a game design lesson I’m still trying to learn. How to have fun in games where I have no agency at all (or feel that way) is really hard for me. And this means when I’m playtesting other designers games I find it hard to give meaningful feedback that is not “please give me agency”
