MMX optimized span renderer (2 pixels per loop) now works in FastDoom’s backbuffered modes. Benchmarks on a Pentium MMX 200 @ 640×400 (Ultimate Doom demo3): - 486 code path: 49.237 fps - MMX code path: 56.031 fps (+13.8%) Really happy with the results, although it’s still not 100% optimized.

Here's a visualization of the EGA's VRAM data bus. Each graphics controller controllers two planes, and has a 16-bit data path to do so, letting the EGA read all four planes at once, which is nice. #retrocomputing

First tests of the MMX column rendering code in FastDoom (VBE2 backbuffered modes, 640x400), tested on an Intel Pentium MMX 200: Unrolled non MMX code: 49.872 fps Rolled 2-pixels-per-loop MMX code: 51.487 fps (+3.2%) So it’s a bit faster. I think I'll get a bigger speed-up with MMX span rendering.

I think I’ve found a way to optimize the R_DrawSpanBackbuffer and R_DrawSpanVBE2 functions in FastDoom for Intel Pentium and AMD K6 processors by avoiding the SHLD instruction (it’s used twice per pixel drawn).
