If #r4today reflected Dyson vacuum cleaners, the programme would have started brightly, developed problems around 7.30 and finally packed up just before the 8.00 news.

This is all fine and dandy, but what revolts me is that all the washing is dunked into the same stagnant trough. One advantage of having had so many non-British-descent partners is that it’s taken as read that dishes are washed under running water.

I just caught up with Mark Gatiss’s latest ghost story adaptation (E F Benson’s Room in the Tower). The story itself is one of the most frightening I’ve ever read and, sadly, it just doesn’t translate to screen.
