Brooklyn streets should be safer and easier to get around by bus and bike. @cmcrystalhudson.bsky.social, @chiosse.bsky.social, @cmrestler.bsky.social, and @bkbpreynoso.bsky.social all agree: It's time to redesign Dekalb and Lafayette for people.

Last month we sent a letter to the @mayor.nyc.gov and @nyc-dot.bsky.social urging them to prioritize a people first redesign of Dekalb and Lafayette, providing faster buses, safe east/west bike routes, and safer intersections. Our local elected officials joined in signing.

We are excited to hear that @mayor.nyc.gov is prioritizing the long-delayed bike lane network in Flatbush, East Flatbush, and Midwood. We have been advocating for this network for years, both to protect cyclists and to improve safety for all road users in our neighborhoods.

We're really disappointed to hear that the bike lane network in Community District 14, including protected bike lanes on Cortelyou and Dorchester Roads, will not be installed this year as DOT originally presented. We're hearing they're targeting installation for next year.

On Wednesday, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a box truck on Morgan Ave near Cooper Park. Members of the community are gathering tonight for an emergency action in response to this tragedy - both to honor the life lost and to call on the city to take urgent steps to make Morgan Ave safe.

It's really hazardous how narrow the new Brooklyn Bridge bike lane is when you get a flat in the middle of the bridge like I just did, cc @nyc.streetsblog.org @tabk.bsky.social @bikenewyork.bsky.social There's not space to walk the bike to somewhere safe to fix it alongside two-way bike travel.

Another thing that keeps getting mentioned by those supporting Intro 606 including Bob Holden himself: if Intro 606 isn't the solution, what is? Intro 1138 to daylight NYC would prevent thousands of crashes and injuries a year. If safety is truly the concern, this is a proven solution.

Intro 606 is TERRIBLE. It would require e-bikes and e-scooters to be licensed and open up people who ride any type of bike to harassment. NYC needs solutions that save lives, not fear-based policies that will lead to bike bans.
