For most of human existence, such radical change only happened if society was destroyed by war, disease, or local depletion of key resources. Between 2500-1800BC, southern Britain maintained about the same material culture, technology, trade links, burial practices, etc. No wonder we’re weirded out

Oh is that how it works? One candidate is such a corrupt criminal that his own party tried to purge him, a crook who pardoned a pedophile and is loathed wide and far. But he plays the man card and now it's "front and center" in the race? "Sorry, folks, the crook said we have to talk gender!"

At the very least, Texas seems very preoccupied with spending an unsettlingly large portion of its life trying to convince everyone it is super butch. I mean, Texas, look, if you LIKE the big dumb hat, wear it, but if you’re wearing it for me, it’s not working, y’know?

1. OK, so this is the ninth book in this very pulpy space opera, right? But it actually mostly takes place in an office building, and is about the protagonist having a midlife crisis and nervous breakdown. I am in absolute fucking awe of how good it is, and can't describe it without sounding insane.

In 2012 I took a comp ling course that went deep into language models as AI. The professor dropped a quote that I think about probably once a week now: “building a computer model of language and expecting intelligence is like building a computer model of the ocean and expecting to get wet”

My favorite Sam Neil fact will always be that he designed a future Australian flag that replaces the union jack with the aboriginal flag for Event Horizon and insisted the film use it.

Once upon a time, when film editing moved to computers, Final Cut Pro on a Mac was a revolution in inexpensive professional post production. And the user interface was super simple. Anyone could learn it. So a lot of producers decided they don’t need a professional editor. Short 🧵.

And on the basis of this -- a pure policy disagreement about which he was demonstrably, wildly wrong -- Roberts dreamed up "major questions doctrine" & thereby rendered US law one big game of Calvinball. You just can't exaggerate how low, how scummy, how dumb, how fraudulent it all was.

Another way of saying this is that the regulations would have had a cost of zero. They would not have required the power sector to do anything it wasn't going to do already. Roberts said it would be the most expensive reg ever (because he heard that on Fox). But it cost nothing.

The biggest story in the world right now is that the president of the United States is a demented old man who takes pleasure in torturing and killing people and is committing crimes with impunity. And yet most legacy media outlets are too cowardly to tell it like it is.
