Going with a poker analogy, the Padres are a very aggressive player who have overplayed their hand. They’re now pot committed with a decent hand, but they’re unlikely to improve moving forward and they don’t really know if they’re ahead or behind. It’s one of the worst places to be in poker.

As usual, the Padres have their eye on the prize by making BIG moves like firing yet another hitting coach

Obviously, I wish they’d have been patient and let prospects arrive in hindsight, but I respected, and still respect AJ’s ambition and willingness to go for it. It could have worked out if X, Y, and Z, but it didn’t. I’m not super resentful—just think you need fresh eyes and analyses at this point.
