I was a T32 at Columbia last year; if I had stayed, I would have lost my job this week. After years of sacrifice for this career - putting off life milestones, moving for internships and fellowships, working for not enough money - this is so devastating. My outrage is indescribable.

Heartbreaking to see announcements of major layoffs at most research organizations that have played a vital role in supporting federal statistics for education and developing high-quality evidence about what policies/practices actually work. Below are just a few examples from my LinkedIn feed.

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.” I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

It is ALL so devastating. For science, for inclusion, for medicine, for security, for higher education, for all of us.

Happy to see major journals (BMJ, Lancet) encouraging scientists to stand up for science. Absolutely disheartened to hear of universities/professors suggesting that we begin to comply with eliminating demographic variables from research. Giving in is not the answer - ever.
