I give this feedback all the time when reviewing qualitative research, but the quotes you present are meant to ILLUSTRATE your point, not MAKE it. Don’t make readers guess how you see the quote tying back to the point you’re trying to make. The quote should be set up and explained thoroughly.

Today is my 31st birthday (yay!). I was reflecting this morning on how many birthday wishes I wasted in my youth, desperately pleading with the birthday wish gods to grant me a thin body. It makes me sad to think about how many women have likely thrown away their birthday wishes in the same way.

If you think that professors exist as repositories of knowledge that students ask for answers, you’re missing the entire point of a college education. We’re here to teach students how to do research, how to analyze and argue, how to think for themselves — how to find the answers on their own.

Academic version: you don't have to cite assholes. You don't have to invite them to conferences. Or to workshops. Or to be speakers. You don't have to engage with them at all!

I believe that widespread harassment and constant threats of violence have silenced many once-prominent feminist voices in online spaces, and I think that this has had adverse downstream consequences for young women on social media, who see misogyny normalized and promoted to them.

I love pre-ordering books because I inevitably forget that I ordered them, and then I have an exciting surprise come directly to my doorstep a few months later (it also really helps authors!).
