It has been VERY frustrating having knowledge since I was like... twelve that one day renewable energy and energy storage would unlock so much for us while Adults yelled about how impossible that was. It's more frustrating now that it's happening and people still can't see it.

To me, it doesn't take too much imagination to realize "oh, these panels make electricity from the sun. And these batteries can store that electricity to use later. That seems better and cheaper than constantly burning fuels" yet propaganda is so good people think it can't possibly scale.

It has been very, very frustrating to be a person who realizes things over the last decade. What things? Oh, like for instance that everything I own which is electric just plugs into the power grid and works without the use of fuels. And that we can now make electricity without fuels.

Co-signing this as someone who works in tech, though outside of the Bay. When tech workers had more structural power, companies got pushback internally. That was Trump 1.0, when tech seemed like it really was trying to do good. Now workers have little power. So they can't rein their employers in.

Up until WWII, most major U.S. cities were actually quite European in design. Detroit, Denver, Los Angeles, Dallas -- the bombs of carbrain hadn't reached them yet, and they had good bones: Transit systems, walkability, dense urban neighborhoods. IOW, the car industry had no real future in the US.

A common trope in carbrain is "we can't make US cities more like Europe because Europe wasn't built for cars." There was this thing called "World War II," after which many EU cities *were rebuilt for cars* -- with help from U.S. carbrained planners! But within a few decades, they hated it.

So long story short, this addresses a grievance of many folks like tradies who work in HVAC (expensive new refrigerants, forced retirement of serviceable equipment) and is probably thought politically effective. But it won't work, and the phase-out is important work we should be doing anyway. Fin.

And I think I should say I actually do think we need to help make the manufacturing of refrigeration equipment cheaper, because heat pumps are the future. And I do actually think we need to ban refrigerants with high GWPs! But, while flawed, the phase-out in motion cannot simply be stopped. 7/x

So far our policy has been to allow such patents and licensing fees to keep the price of next generation refrigerants high but enforcing a phase out of the old refrigerant. There is a very easy argument to make that this enriches refrigerant companies—I don't necessarily support this tack. But. 5/x

Now, if you're wondering why the delightfully smart geniuses in our government believed unwinding the phase out is a good idea, that's because the next generation of refrigerants is currently very expensive due to things like patents. This makes the old refrigerants cheaper to produce. 4/x

Because the planned phase out was already in motion, the manufacturers of refrigeration products have already altered their product lines. Things like adding electronic expansion valves to have finer control of refrigerant pressures, swapping compressors for those suited to higher pressures etc 2/x

Okay, so obviously this is very dumb, but for an explanation of why: The "rules being eased" is really "unwinding the phase-out of HFC refrigerants." HFCs are responsible for the extremely high global warming potential of refrigerants, and our previous saner government was working to fix this 1/x
