Caught this with my stuff some years ago by reading to someone on a road trip! I tend to be pretty heavy on dialogue, and boy when you're reading it aloud repetitive tags get old fast. Learned to trim WAY back on them, either attaching to small actions or just trusting the reader to follow the flow.

Unsolicited writing advice: no. 8075: There is no such thing as serious writing. There are only writers who take their work seriously, and those who don’t. Tragedy is no more “serious” than comedy. Children’s writing is no less “serious” than writing for adults. Good writing is wherever you find it.

Most "classics" are boring as fuck to a modern reader in no small part because the context of the story is not understood by them and so many of the allusions and "inside jokes" known to then-contemporary readers have been lost in time and in translation

Also, this cultural "uncanny valley" gets really weird for science fiction, which is supposed to be about "the future" but was written for a then-contemporary audience (with a then-contemporary understanding of tech/science) so it has two full vectors of cultural shift, running at different speeds
