Defence spending and net zero are actually quite similar in economic terms. No one benefits directly from tanks, fighter jets or missiles: they are a thing we have to build to make our world safer, to avoid catastrophe. Which is exactly the same reason why we need to do net zero.

Now, I do think thereās a strong moral imperative to help poorer countries catch up. We should help them build capital, skills, better institutions, ensure they have fair access to global markets (one reason why aid budgets are so important). But we definitely shouldnāt stop tradeā¦
