2nd July 1863. Battle of Gettysburg. For perhaps the only time in the entire war the Confederates seem to be winning. Dan Sickles, commander III Corps, is ordered hold on Cemetery Ridge. For reasons unknown he advances. Broken, his men begin to flee. This is the moment on which the war depends /1

5–4 on a constitutional question that is older, more settled, and just as clear on the text and purpose as "can women vote?" They're coming for that one too, it's currently in the "right-wing extremists on social media" stage, same place where "there's no birthright citizenship" arose.

This is a dangerous pattern with this Court: They find a delegation paired with a constraint, decide they don’t like the constraint, but appear totally untroubled by the idea that Congress delegated the power only *because* prior precedent assured them their constraints would be binding.

Wow. Magistrate Judge Scott Varholak ordered a bond hearing w/this note: "If the Court is wrong, let another court declare that a noncitizen with no criminal history, no history of flight, & an adjudicated right to asylum may be detained indefinitely without running afoul of the Due Process Clause."

The great American state fair being stupid Trump bullshit does legit make me sad, if I’m being honest. A lot of the 250 stuff does. This could have been a really cool and special thing and literally any normal president would have pulled it off.

We shouldn't dismiss the desecration of our republican iconography and civic symbols as gross but ultimately trivial. It goes to the heart of his whole project, the hot molten core of what he wants to destroy about America. It's not just generically authoritarian, it's literal Caesarism.

This line from Ketanji Brown Jackson—that the Court's "objective is protecting guns"—is clearly right, but it's pretty unusual for justices to put sentiments like this in writing

Hello! 👋 I'm hoping to raise money for two Bay Area cat rescues. If you post a screenshot of you donating at least $20, I will answer a style-related question for you. But first, let me tell you about the rescues, why they're worthy of your support, and hopefully get you to adopt a cat. 🧵
