There's no great institutional history or culture there and that fragility is reinforced by their terrible hiring and training practices. They're jumped-up mall ninjas with no discipline. Which makes it a willing tool to try to terrorize Americans, but also a fragile one.

I'm just going to point out that ICE is about 23 years old. It was formed as part of the response to 9/11 and was reactionary, performative, and racist from the start. Its not eternal. This is not a thousand-year Reich.

..but it's real, and you can invest in it at any time, in any place, building networks of care for the ongoing tough times that can pivot when bigger crises emerge.

We saw it early in the pandemic, in every climate shock & now in Minneapolis. The impulse of most people in a crisis is to share, connect & protect, often at risk to the self. Capitalism and existing power structures have trouble comprehending it and then often try to undermine it

The entire modern conservative project exists to undo the Warren Court and bring back Jim Crow. Everything else is a means to that end. And in their spaces they've never been particularly subtle or quiet about it.

Something I desperately need everyone to understand is that the entire modern conservative movement, from Buckley to Trump and from the Heritage Foundation to the Federalist Society, exists as a direct backlash to the Warren Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Ed. www.ms.now/opinion/segr...

White supremacy explains many apparent contradictions. Conservative calls for free speech were always about freedom to use slurs without sanction. Calls for small government were always about denying Black folks rights and state protections. This is conservatives achieving their goals.

And yes, modern civil asset forfeiture rules, policies, and enforcement guidelines, were written by and promoted by Joe Biden. About $3 billion a year, just stolen from people, mostly Black. You only hear about it when US cops foolishly try to steal like this from non-Black people.

Unfortunately, this is the part where I remind people that Black 10th graders get beat up by cops every day. This is the part where I remind people about modern civil asset forfeiture, where US police steal more value from people (mostly Black) than every form of theft other than wage theft.

This is 10th-grader Arnoldo Bazan. A citizen. Immigration agents grabbed him and put him in a chokehold. "We're from the United States bro!' he screamed. Agents took and sold his phone And when he finally got home hours later, his shirt was ripped, he neck had angry, red welts, and he sobbed.

I see people talk about ICE by calling them the Gestapo, and while its not hard to see the comparison; they really aught to be compared to something homegrown. Because in truth, the closest thing we can compare ICE to is to federal slave catchers. The operation is the same.
